DIY Curly Layer | Newborn Posing Prop

Updated: Oct 6, 2022

If you are here reading this blog post, the chances that you saw the picture I posted in the SunnyMelon #NewbornPhotography facebook group are very high. Hi there👋🏻! I am happy that you are here! Regardless of how you came across this blog post, I am happy that you are here!

If you are anything like me, you are always looking for the inexpensive alternative to most newborn photography props. Now, It's not that I do not appreciate prop vendors, It's just that I love to get creative. I thrive on the challenge of a good DIY project and these curly layers check mark all of the boxes. It also turns out that they are a lot simpler than I imagined they would be. The only down side to this DIY is that the process is very time consuming..but, borderline therapeutic so i can't complain. Plus it saves me money in the long run so I don't mind spending my evening unwinding, pulling apart the yarn, felting while watching Netflix.

Before you watch the video below, check out the list i created to shop all the products that you will need to make your own curly layer. I purchased everything i needed from JoAnn Fabrics, but i am sure you would be able to find the same products on Amazon and even at stores such as Walmart too.

  • Felting Tool - I purchased mine from JoAnn Fabrics but I am sure you can find something similar, if not the same, on Amazon.

  • Felt Sheet(s) - You can purchase whatever size you prefer. I personally like 2 9x12 sheets. I also purchased these are JoAnn Fabrics, but cannot find the exact ones on their website.

  • Felting Brush Mat or flower foam - after breaking the needles off in the flower foam before even completing my first curling layer (oops!), I went ahead and purchased the felting brush mat when I made a trip back to JoAnn Fabrics to purchase new needles.

  • Wool Yarn - There is no right or wrong, but the looser, the thicker, the better. Here is an example of one from JoAnn Fabrics

Without further ado, I hope this quick #curlylayertutorialvideo will help you create all the curly layers you heart desires.

p.s If you found this video useful my Venmo is @courtneycarnes 😜🤣 hehe

Comment and let me know what you think. I can't wait to see what you create!

Happy felting!

Thank you for the tutorial! I am going to give this a try! I have a question though.... the example yarn you posted says it is acrylic, not wool. So, can you basically use any type of yarn?
